Certified Neurologist, has joined the practice. With expertise in the treatment
of Parkinson's Disease, Movement Disorders, Deep Brain Stimulation, and Botulinum
Toxin Injections, Dr. Maddux brings an added dimension to the comprehensive service
approach of Riverhills.
Prior to joining Riverhills, Dr. Maddux was an
integral part of a team at Case Western Reserve University and University Hospital's
Case Medical Center (in Cleveland) that is leading research in use of deep brain
stimulation in treatment of Tourette syndrome.
He received his Doctor of
Medicine from UT Southwestern Medical School (1992) Dallas, Texas and Fellowship
in Movement Disorders, Neurology (1997-1998), at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation,
Cleveland, Ohio.

Schmerler has expertise in Neuropsychology and Rehabilitation Psychology:
Assessment of cognitive dysfunction due to dementia, epilepsy, traumatic brain
injury, tumors, and Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH).
Dr.
Schmerler received her Doctor in Psychology from Xavier University (2003), Cincinnati,
Ohio and completed her Post Doctoral Fellowship in Neuropsychology at the Drake
Center in Cincinnati.

Riverhills Healthcare will be sponsoring the MSLB (Multiple Sclerosis Lunch Bunch)
Luncheon | | | On
May 8th, Riverhills Healthcare will be sponsoring the MSLB (Multiple Sclerosis
Lunch Bunch) Luncheon. Dr. Reed will be presenting at the luncheon and an update
on Tysabri will be given. The MSLB is a large support and informational group
for family members and individuals with multiple sclerosis. This group meets at
monthly luncheons to receive presentations on various treatments and research
in regard to multiple sclerosis. Tysabri
is a monoclonal antibody that affects the actions of the body's immune system.
Tysabri is given as an injection through a needle placed into a vein in a clinic
or hospital setting every 4 weeks. The medicine must be given slowly through an
IV infusion, and can take up to 1 hour to complete. Tysabri is available only
to select patients through a restricted-use program called the TOUCH Prescribing
Program. To receive this medication, you must be enrolled in this program and
meet all requirements. You will be interviewed before receiving each dose of this
medicine to make sure you still meet these requirements. |

in the April 28th MS Walk starting at Sawyer Point. The theme of this years
walk is Step by Step Closer to a Cure. Employees will also be staffing
a booth featuring information in regard to the treatment of MS with many special

Healthcare hosts nursing students from Northern Kentucky University |
| | Riverhills
healthcare hosted 2 nursing students from Northern Kentucky University during
the winter term. These students were concentrating on a leadership project and
assisted Riverhills Healthcare on preparing for a research study for an oral medication
for the treatment of relapsing-remitting Multiple Sclerosis, Fengolimod which
is a still-investigational oral drug that is taken once daily. More than two million
people worldwide are estimated to suffer from MS, which is the leading cause of
neurological disability in young adults and affects twice as many women as men.

Healthcare has long had an office in the Mercy-Anderson complex, 8000 Five Mile
Road, Ste. 330, where two neurologists, Dr. Maureen Li and Dr. James Anthony have
regular office hours. In March 2007, Riverhills Healthcare was pleased to open
another office in the same building at 8000 Five Mile Road, Ste. 112 where Dr.
Paul.R. Schwetschenau, neurosurgeon, has office hours every Thursday morning.

January 2007 Riverhills Healthcare began a collaborative effort with Dr. Kathleen
Hawker to expand the services offered to patients with Multiple Sclerosis. Dr.
Hawker, a native of Canada, did her undergraduate training at the University of
Western Ontario and then went on to receive her MD at McMaster University in Ontario.
She completed her internship and internal medicine residency at the University
of Toronto and McMaster University. After her neurology training at the University
of Toronto, Dr. Hawker started in private practice and continued working at the
University of Toronto. Dr. Hawker later joined the Multiple Sclerosis program
at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas where she was
involved in the National Multiple Sclerosis Training program. Kathleen Hawker
currently is an Assistant Professor at Ohio State University where she also is
the Clinical Director of the Waddell Center for Multiple Sclerosis. Her special
interests are translation research correlating basic laboratory data to clinical
treatments for MS. She has also been interested in treatments for primary progressive
MS. Dr. Hawker sees patients at the 111 Wellington Place location in Mt. Auburn
on Wednesday mornings. | | |
