Rehabilitation is
the use of exercises, modalities, and manual techniques to help develop, restore,
and/or maintain appropriate strength of tissues and alignment of body parts, thereby
allowing people to move correctly and with less pain. Rehabilitation looks not
only at the affected body part but how that disability impacts the rest of the
person's life and functional activity.
It is our belief that post-surgical
care goes beyond pain relief and strives to achieve optimal spinal function through
retraining of postural awareness, muscle activation patterns, improving flexibility
and the overcoming of fear avoidance behaviors that are not uncommonly seen in
post operative patients.
The Division of Neurosurgery
has developed Post-Operative Rehabilitation to insure a seamless transition
and clinical match between the type of surgery performed and the type of rehabilitation
best suited for that surgery, and individualized to the patients occupational
and lifestyle demands.
Having our rehabilitation suite on site allows
our physicians and exercise therapists to collaborate on those patients requiring
a higher level of direct supervision.
